Sister Act

Ken Ludwig's Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery

A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder

Charming and cunning, Monty Navarro discovers he’s in line for an earldom in the aristocratic D'Ysquith family. Eighth in line, to be exact. Monty plots to speed up the line of succession through any means necessary - all while juggling his mistress, his fiancee, his reputation, and an increasing body count that’s raising suspicions of the law.

Each of the eight heirs stand on the chopping block of Monty’s ambitions, hilariously played by one scene-stealing actor swapping from role to role. This Tony Award-winning musical romp gleefully tells the story of wrongfully getting what is rightfully yours.

About DOWNSTATE:

Hailed as “a great, squirmy moral-thrill-ride of a play,” by the New York Times, Downstate takes audiences into the lives of four convicted sex offenders living under strict legal and social restrictions in a state-run group house, each with a complex past and challenging present. When one of them is confronted by one of his victims, unexpected emotions and conversations unfold, prompting difficult yet essential questions about forgiveness, accountability, and what it means to seek redemption.

Clybourne Park

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities

Provocative - Satirical - Insightful

“A savagely funny and insightful time bomb.”- The Hollywood Reporter

The scene is one house on Clybourne Street in Chicago’s South Side. In 1959, a Black family moves in. In 2009, a white family does. In between, everything changes - attitudes, demographics, and property values. Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire about the politics of race, housing, and gentrification.

Loosely inspired by Lorraine Hansberry'sA Raisin in the Sun, Bruce Norris's pitch-black comedy takes on the specter of gentrification in our communities, leaving no stone unturned in the process.

Lyle the Crocodile

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities

When Joshua and the Primm family move to East 88th Street in New York City, they find a surprise guest in their new home’s bathtub - one friendly crocodile named Lyle.

He’s different, and he’s a crocodile, but the neighbors in the building begin to love him. Well, except for Mr. Grumps who would rather Lyle be at the zoo for the safety of his kitty, Loretta. But when Lyle the Crocodile saves the day, even Mr. Grumps must look past his fear of those who are different and begin to appreciate Lyle for just what he is - one friendly, tap-dancing crocodile.

Based on the Lyle, Lyle the Crocodile and The House on East 88th Street books by Bernard Waber, this delightful story was adapted for the stage by Kevin Kling. This Theatre For Young Audiences production is a musical recommended for grades K-5 and teaches about examining our assumptions and embracing what makes each of us unique.

Tickets for each performance of Lyle the Crocodile includes admittance to our Peak Into the Production program - a look into the magic of theatre! A collaboration between the Education and Production teams, this 15-20 minute program, led by actors from the show, gives young audiences a deeper understanding of how costumes, set design, props, lighting, and sound come together to bring a story to life on stage.

Rent

Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center

Book & Music by Jonathan Larson | Lyrics by Jonathan Larson and Billy Aronson | Directed by Marissa Hebert

May 2, 2024 – June 2, 2024

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

When gay college student Matthew Shepard was found brutalized and tied to a fence outside Laramie, Wyoming in 1998, his death made people across the country take a hard look within. Twenty-three years after its World Premiere at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, The Laramie Project still resonates today. As America continues to grapple with hate crimes, we dive deep into a very human story of the prejudice, hatred, conflicts and contradictions revealed by Matthew’s death.

Patchworked together from hundreds of interviews, The Laramie Project explores the reactions of sixty real-life characters at the epicenter of one of the country’s most heinous anti-gay crimes, examining the depth of human hatred and the heights of compassion and love.

One Man, Two Guvnors

Brighton, England. The swinging 60s. Hilarity and hijinks ensue when Francis Henshall, fired from a skiffle band and in search of new work, finds himself employed by a woman (posing as her mobster brother) and by her boyfriend (who is hiding from that brother). How long can Francis keep them apart? Featuring live music and uproarious fun, Richard Bean’s adaptation of “The Servant of Two Masters” delivers a fresh spin on a farcical commedia classic.

When King Leontes inexplicably accuses his pregnant wife of infidelity he makes a cruel, rash decision that he must spend two decades atoning for. Shakespeare’s nuanced epic explores both the heartrending corrosion of jealousy and the joyous redemption of forgiveness that is hard-won. Borrowing elements from fantasy and mythology, “The Winter’s Tale” weaves an audacious tapestry you have to experience to believe.

Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown

World Premiere of Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown

Denver Center for the Performing Arts Cabaret announces that Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown will play at the Garner Galleria Theatre May 6 – October 15 as part of the 2023/24 Broadway subscription season. After presenting a concert version in June 2022, the DCPA is pleased to produce the world premiere production of Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown, by Sheryl McCallum and David Nehls. This intimate cabaret experience is based on the book Miss Rhythm by Ruth Brown with Andrew Yule and explores the life and times of R&B legend Ruth Brown through story and song accompanied by a five-piece jazz band. Kenny Moten will direct the production.

Subscribers may buy additional tickets starting today, February 9. To buy a subscription visit denvercenter.org/broadway. Tickets will go on sale to the public February 15.

“This has been such an amazing experience to introduce or re-introduce Denver audiences to the music and life of rhythm and blues legend Ruth Brown,” says Sheryl McCallum. “The Galleria offers the perfect space for a show like this. It’s a lot like many of the places Ruth Brown loved to perform in. The show is going to be so much fun, and we are ready for all of it!! Oh, What A Dream!”

“It’s really thrilling to bring more new work to our Denver theater community and getting to do it at the Galleria is wonderful because it’s such a family atmosphere for us,” says David Nehls. “It’s surprising how many people remember Ruth Brown from her days performing in Denver and how passionate they are about her. So, introducing the story of this pioneer in rock ‘n’ roll music to a new generation is definitely a privilege for us, and it’s going to be a good time to boot!”

About Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown:

Before Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, there was Ruth Brown—the legendary rhythm and blues singer best known for her hits “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean,” “Teardrops from My Eyes” and “5-10-15 Hours.” Her powerhouse voice and sassy squeal brought such worldwide success to Atlantic Records in the 1950’s, it was deemed “The House that Ruth Built!”

Miss Rhythm – The Legend of Ruth Brown is performed in the style of the renowned rhythm and blues singer, starring Sheryl McCallum (Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway; Xanadu, Oklahoma! and The Wild Party at the Denver Center) and featuring David Nehls (The Great American Trailer Park Musical, composer/lyricist; Xanadu and The Other Josh Cohen at the Denver Center). Ruth Brown is a pioneer in the development of rock, blues and jazz, a Tony and Grammy award-winner and an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. A true original who showed grace and strength with a great sense of humor, Ruth Brown took the stage with as much talent as she did warmth. Here’s to Ruth!

“The stage don’t stop at the footlights”

At the turn of the 20th century, two premier celebrities beard convention with a new act of defiance. As stars Eva Tanguay and Julian Eltinge straddle their on- and off-stage personas, their latest engagement satirizes gender, respectability, and marriage. Is it a publicity stunt or something more personal? Acclaimed local playwright Jeffrey Neuman infuses vaudeville song and show into a surprisingly timely story that explores the explosive crossroads of gender, fame, sexuality, and power.

Developed at the Denver Center’s inaugural Playwrights Group (2019–20); Finalist, O’Neill Award (2021); Finalist, Woodward/Newman Award (2022).

“There’s only tonight, and the moon, and us – and the bonded Bourbon.”

The Hogan family is barely scraping by on their meager tenant farm in the years following the Great War and Spanish Flu pandemic. When Josie and her father, roughened by loss and the land, catch wind that their farm is at risk of being sold out from under them, they conspire to blackmail rich landowner Jim Tyrone. Moonshine flows, hearts spill, and truths reveal a powerful elegy of humanity, grief, and loneliness. Four-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and Nobel laureate Eugene O’Neill’s bittersweet A Moon for the Misbegotten “is singular within its author’s body of work for its forgiving spirit” (The New York Times).

BREATH & IMAGINATION: THE STORY OF ROLAND HAYES

by Daniel Beaty

Before Paul Robeson and Marian Anderson, there was trailblazing African-American vocalist Roland Hayes. Born the son of a slave, Roland turned adversity into opportunity, and, at his peak in the 1920s, was the highest paid singer in the world. This inspirational musical play soars with spirituals and operatic arias as it traces Hayes' journey from a plantation in Georgia to performing for royalty in Europe.

What do you get when you plop two teenage Brooklyn boys into a small apartment in Yonkers with their unwelcoming grandmother, overexcitable aunt and gangster uncle? A Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Neil Simon, abounding with Jewish-American humor that highlights the power of resilience and family with great warmth.

ABOUT THE PLAY

After the death of their mother, two young brothers are sent to stay with their formidable grandmother for the longest ten months of their lives. Grandmother Kurnitz is a one-woman German front—a refugee and a widow who has steeled her heart against the world. Her coldness and intolerance have crippled her own children. The boys must contend with their strong-willed grandmother, their aunt and her secret romance, and their uncle, a small-time hoodlum, in this strange new world called Yonkers.

Playing the role of Grandmother Kurnitz and serving as co-director, Marsha Mason draws on her place as one of the premiere interpreters of Neil Simon’s work. Married to Simon for a decade, Mason received three of her four Academy Award nominations for pieces written by the eminent dramatist (The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two and Only When I Laugh). Mason’s appearances in other Simon works include Broadway (The Good Doctor), London’s West End (The Prisoner of Second Avenue opposite Richard Dreyfuss), film (Max Dugan Returns), and on record (the Grammy-nominated recording of The Prisoner of Second Avenue for L.A. Theatre Works).

ABUELAS

Gabriela is an Argentine concert cellist living in Chicago with her American husband and adjusting to life as a new mom. Life is good—normal life worries—but good, until a visit from two strangers upends everything. This play, about the long and devastating repercussions of Argentina’s military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983, asks how one goes on after discovering their life is a lie? Does the restoration of truth bring freedom or suffering? Is it possible to integrate two identities into one life? Abuelas explores these questions as well as the heart’s capacity for forgiveness, even in the face of the harshest betrayal. Written as a companion play to The Madres, Abuelas is a bilingual play in both English and Spanish.

ABUELAS

Listen to Episode 1 of The 8th Light!

Cast and Creative Team

Northern California, Marin County in Spring, 1958 is a quiet and peaceful place to live. The biggest and frankly only dramatic enigma in the county’s history was in 1955 when Sarah McLane, beloved member of the community, mother and brilliant physicist disappeared without a trace. However, 8th Graders, Cassiopeia McLane, her cousin Dashiell McLane, and their friend, Huxley Pendleton are thrust into a bizarre mystery when they happen upon an unconscious man sprawled atop the massive Crystal Mountain Satellite Dish who seems to have materialized out of thin air. What follows is a cacophony of wrenches thrown into the spokes of Caz, Hux, Dash and their parents’ understanding of the laws of time, space and the unbelievable potential of serendipity and fate. The 8th Light is a decade-spanning adventure racing towards an answer to the question of if we have the ability to change the world, should we.

The 8th Light is an original, fictional, serialized, sci-fi adventure drama that tips its hat to Lost, Stranger Things, Back to the Future and The Goonies. The show combines elements of everyone’s favorite childhood sci-fi adventure stories with the aesthetic of old-fashioned radio dramas. It is a decade-spanning adventure racing towards an answer to the question of: if we have the ability to change the world, should we?

While a project like this would typically be called a ‘podcast,’ we have approached The 8th Light as a true radio play/audio drama in the traditional sense and have tried to capture the spirit of classic serialized radio programs produced during the golden age of the form. The result is a snappy, fun, and adventurous 7 episode first season that celebrates some young scientific minds, their empathetic caregivers, and the collective desire to find your place and purpose in the universe.

The 8th Light is geared towards 8-13 year olds and their caregivers, parents, and teachers.

The creators, artists, and producers are a team of artists and educators that have been at the forefront of telling stories in innovative ways for diverse young audiences for the last 20 years. The team has created dynamic audio and multimedia works with multiple institutions and events that have been experienced everywhere from the Super Bowl to Lincoln Center.

Thursday & Saturday – July 22 & 24 at 7pm ET

What do you write after you have written the world’s greatest play? Hopefully, not another Timon of Athens. Fortunately for Shakespeare, he is caught in the middle of the pandemic of 1603 and theaters are closed for a year. The plague opens his eyes to the mysteries of life and death when he is quarantined with his pod-companions-in-lockdown – a young Puritan lawyer and a mature streetwise prostitute. Will Shakespeare thrive creatively during quarantine? Will his follow up play be as disappointing as his last? Or will he write his masterpiece? A commission from Florida Studio Theater.

Bill Cain is the author of Equivocation (Oregon Shakespeare Festival); 9 Circles (Marin Theatre); How to Write a New Book for the Bible (Berkeley Rep/Seattle Rep). Stand-Up Tragedy (Mark Taper Forum- six LA Critics Awards, Arena Stage- three Helen Hayes Awards, Hartford Stage and ultimately Broadway- Joe A. Calloway Award). He has twice received the Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award. For television he was the creator/writer/producer of the ABC series Nothing Sacred, which received both a WGA and Peabody Award. He is the author of the recently published book The Diary of Jesus Christ, available from Orbis Books.

In August 1908, 107 years before the legalization of same-sex unions, two of the biggest stars in America, Eva Tanguay and Julian Eltinge, stepped onto the stage of the Alhambra Theatre in New York City and thumbed their noses at gender roles, respectability, and the institution of marriage. Was it a performance? Was it a publicity stunt? Or, was it something much more personal for the two entertainers involved?

Set at the turn of the 20th century, The Headliners is a surprisingly timely story that explores the sometimes explosive crossroads of gender, fame, sexuality, and power.

PREMIERING SUNDAY, MAY 16 @ 7PM

The Extinctionist

THE EXTINCTIONIST

a new one-act opera in development

semi-staged presentations at PS21 Chatham

Music by Daniel Schlosberg

Libretto by Amanda Quaid, based on her play

Directed, Conceived, and Developed by Louisa Proske

Music Directed by Jacob Ashworth

Live Stream Remote Technical Director - Max Silverman

Heartbeat has commissioned its first new opera! The Extinctionist will be developed in a semi-staged presentation in Spring 2021 at PS21 in Chatham, NY -- the premiere of the full production is planned for Spring 2022. The 60-minute one-act opera is scored for four singers and four multi-instrumentalist players. Schlosberg’s music follows Quaid’s tightly-drawn libretto, from contemporary small talk to roiling dreamscape, its acute style encompassing witty gesture, expressionist stichomythia, and full-on dramatic pathos in the tradition of opera’s great mad scenes. Surrounded by apple orchards and acres of beautiful land, the open-air pavilion at PS21 is a poignant place to begin our journey on this piece questioning motherhood, climate collapse, and our relationship to nature.

A young couple is trying to have a baby. Ice caps are melting. Brooklyn will soon be underwater. Upcycling is the new recycling. The Woman wonders: What if the only way to protect her future daughter was to not have her? What if she could save the planet from unspeakable future destruction by sterilizing herself ... by becoming the very first "Extinctionist”? In this dark comedy, a Woman’s body becomes the battlefield of our political anguish, conflicting desires, and individual responsibility.
